The interesting part is learning about the German culture, and about to learn from different angles about the new things Germany have produced, and the trials and obstacles that they will face.
I do agree with your views about the passage you selected. People come to America to pursue their dreams, leaving behind a country where they grew up. Similarly, Siddhartha, left behind his father and that life to pursue his dream of experiencing the truth. I think this is a very powerful passage, and sets the tone for the rest of the story.
